High-rise collective housing with interlocked spaces

Stacking transforms the relationship between the components and hence betweenresidents, creating a diversity of interlaced spaces intended to enhance the life of the community. The exclusively residential use is enriched with shared areas and services in an aim to reinforce and add value to shared living.

The blocks in The Interlace by OMA and Ole Scheeren are stacked around a hexagonal pattern with 60 m distance between the facing blocks. The maximum building height is 24 storeys and the coverage is around 20% while dwelling density stands at 128 per hectare.

The insertion of the new building by OMA is an operation aimed at the intensive densification of the administrative centre of Rotterdam. The new building, which replaces a late 1970s office building, adds other residential uses and amenities, such as the new Museum Rotterdam. The formal principle is based on the adoption of the 3.6 m module. This is a standard size in the construction industry, being a multiple of both 20 and 30 cm, standard sizes that can be used as the basis for many constr.

a+t magazine 44 forms part of the WORKFORCE series, dedicated to the design of workspaces.

A Better Place to Work 2 looks at 20 projects for contemporary buildings and conducts graphic analysis of 10 master works. The article “Redesigning the office building. Sources of inspiration” establishes historical references for the new projects.
