This collective housing project by Maccreanor Lavington is inserted into the master plan designed by Allies and Morrison and Porphyrios Associates for King’s Cross Central, on a brownfield site previously used for industrial and storage uses located between Regent's Canal and the railway hub. This regeneration plan is based on mixed use and re-densification meaning that the new build has a very high Floor Area Ratio, combined with large areas of public space.

This project of collective housing is located within a block of row houses. As an alternative to the typical typology of London boroughs, occupying this residual void between rear courtyards with six dwellings meant forgoing private outdoor space and connection to the street. This would-be huis clos aims to provide a solution to the scarcity of land to build on while also preserving resident independence. Copper Lane considers itself to be co-housing in that all the dwellings share .

In the early 1950s, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon had little experience in building residential complexes. They were focused on their academic work and only had one ongoing project.
