403 Architecture. The Floor of Atsumi. Hamamatsu. Japan
January 23, 2014
While they were refurbishing an old apartment in the city centre the architects removed a false ceiling in order to increase the volume of the small spaces. The scrap wood from the removed joists was cut into irregular segments and used to make the wood flooring for the bedroom. By cutting the wood into small pieces the warpage of the original joists was reduced and the thickness improved strength and noise insulation. The final cuts were sanded down to remove any imperfections.
