De Vylder Vinck Taillieu. House Belgrade. Brussels

December 11, 2013

De Vylder Vinck Taillieu. House Belgrade. Brussels

The conversion of this industrial building into a dwelling establishes a dialogue between the existing run-down structure and the oblique logic of the new timber dividing elements which create a new spatial definition. These partitions, which include their own structure of timber uprights and diagonal elements on one side, are unceremoniously criss-crossed by the original steel girders. They also camouflage the openings between the modules and divide off the vertical service and circulation shafts from the main spaces. The existing structure has in some cases been cleared, as in the case of the second floor, displaying the brickwork vaulting and in other cases is reinforced using corbels and columns to create a new hierarchy according to the material: concrete, metal and wood.
