De Vylder Vinck Taillieu and Trice Hofkens. House 43. Ghent. Belgium
December 11, 2013
Author: De Vylder Vinck Taillieu and Trice Hofkens in collaboration with Bert Van Boxelaere Architect.
In the renovation work for this dwelling, the vertical circulation between the new structures has been laid out in a zigzag sequence crossing the central wall located below the lintel. Instead of opting for the conventional solution of encasing the stairs which would have altered the continuum of the wall, the architects chose to preserve the oversize dimensions of this wall and to create a large opening for the main staircase between the ground floor and the first floor. The continuity of the flow is established with two standard drop-down stairs, one perpendicular to the facade between the first and second floors and another parallel to the facade connecting the second floor to the mezzanine.
