Schemata. Sayama flats. Tokyo. Japan
January 09, 2014
This apartment block, built in the period of post-war economic growth, was designed according to the nLDK system, launched by the public body the Japan Housing Corporation in 1955 as a solution to the housing shortage of the time. The apartments comprised one (Living-Dining-Kitchen) room and one or two bedrooms which adapted to the standard tatami size 90 x 180 cm, ranging from 2 to 6 tatamis per bedroom. Renovation work involved removing partitions and leaving an open floor plan for each user to act freely according to their requirements.
