This project involved excavating an interior courtyard in the centre of a series of inter-connected spaces. It is a courtyard with timber-framed glazing located in the middle of a very deep ground floor in a group of 17th century terraced houses. It also brings daylight and fresh air to the rooms, helping to resolve the uneven forms of the site boundary. The courtyard is paved with black granite uncut sets and the orientation highlights the geometry of the old (running parallel to the street) as against the new, whose compositional axis is aligned with the rear site boundary.
