The extension to this house located in a small seaside town involved adding a building where fired clay was widely used, both in the wall -formed by two layers of English bond brick exposed on both sides- and in the clay tile flooring. The only part of the ground floor with wood flooring is the “snug” (the cosiest room in the house) which integrates the oak panelling of the stairs, and unifies materials. The roof joists and structure are built using oak beams and boarding. The roof has clay roof tiles. Using one single material for the whole envelope contributes to the volumetric sensation while also serving as an alternative to the use of materials such as red brick and tiles which are so commonplace in the traditional English house.
