The generators become complex buildings which, devoid of any contingency, evolve faster and are able to anticipate potential changes, to reconfigure themselves in order to adapt.

The machine-building Sport and Cultural Centre by Bruther in Saint-Blaise district (París) has many ramifications to untangle. This complexity is the result of mixed programs and is an inheren.

In the 1990s the military began to use the acronym V.U.C.A. (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) to describe the dynamic and incredibly complex nature of modern warfare. Since then, the only constant has been an ever-increasing degree of complexity.

Complex Buildings, the new series of a+t magazine, identifies different conditions of complexity within architecture. Through classic and contemporary projects grouped i.

The master plan proposes the re-purposing of this former brownfield area, located on the outskirts of Zurich, using a urban block typology which combines different build heights. This height diversity is a result of the need to provide several dwelling typologies: row maisonettes, rooftop apartments, high-rise dwellings and live/work units. The urban block by EM2N runs along the perimeter creating a retail street on south and west facades.

A young 28-year-old Wright designed this complex comprising 46 rent-controlled dwellings where he aimed to improve the living conditions of the lower classes. The complex is laid out around a semi-public courtyard which has access through large arches and in which the front doors to the ground floor dwellings are located. An open deck, with entrances at different points, runs along the top floor. He avoids covered communal spaces. The complex was partially demolished in 1974. Kenneth Frampton.

This collective housing project by PPAG is an exercise in overcoming constraints and its solution to the traditional closed block is to reject the interior void in favour of exterior space. The maximum volume is condensed around the central atrium and frees up the edges of the plot. It rises above the neighbouring eaves yet is set back to let daylight into the existing buildings.

50 Urban Blocks is the first in a collection of flash cards aimed to simplify architectural design. This first set of cards contains 50 new examples of how to design a block, how to organize space and ultimately how to build the city.

Each 13 x 8 cm double-sided card proposes a possible urban form including measurements and data on density in the city.

Their reduced size and individual format mean that it is possible to lay out the 50 urban forms proposed in the pack all at on.
