Storytellers are those buildings which speak from the eye and the mind of the architect. The richer, the more settled their references, the more playful and imaginative their connections with reality, culture or history, and the more unexpected facets to be discovered by spectators as they try to decipher the buildings’ codes.

The transformation of a skyscraper into an urban block, or vice-versa the transformation of a perimeter block into a skyscraper, is achieved in this collective housing work by applying the figure of the hyperbolic paraboloid whereby two elevations of the original prism are diluted into a warped plane. The final form by BIG is a hybrid somewhere between the two typologies which adapts perfectly to the Manhattan grid yet preserves the qualities associated with European residential blocks.

The linker-interiors are not a continuous whole but rather a complex whole produced from a continuous presence, from liberated interiors with positive relationships.

Hunziker Areal is a proposal for a compact dense city whose aim is to reduce energy consumption per person to 2,000 watts per hour –48 kilowatts per day– (average Swiss consumption in 2014 stood at 6,500 watts). The insertion of the new building by OMA is an operation aimed at the intensive densification of the administrative centre of Rotterdam. The new building, which replaces a late 1970s office building, adds other residential uses and amenities, such as the new Museum Rotterdam.
