Downtown Brussels has the outskirts on the inside. This is what it looks like if one observes this isolated dwelling set in an idyllic landscape as if it were on the edge of a large city despite its downtown location. It is easy to destroy all this in order to enlarge the floor area, which is the reason why the decision was taken to make the extension evident, making it disappear underneath the existing volume by building a plinth to conceal the new build.

This project was launched as a result of the aim of several collectives to revitalize markets as vital hubs in neighbourhoods while also finding a space in which to carry out collaborative work. They chose one of the vacant stalls in San Fernando Market in Lavapiés, Madrid. The work was based on reusing materials and furniture and on participation and self-building by future users. On sourcing the reclaimed materials both the proximity and the life cycle of each material were taken int.

Extension work on this 19th-century house in downtown Ghent focused on creating an intermediate space between the dwelling and the outdoor space. The garden perimeter walls were doubled in some areas using fine black painted steel frames with grapevines planted between them. Between the house and the garden, a thin strip functioning as a temperature buffer was roofed over. The most exterior face comprises glass sliding doors.

Yardhouse is a model work space for artists promoted, designed, implemented and managed by Assemble. The project, built on a brownfield site close to the architects’ office, aimed to build a low-cost prototype which could be replicated on other vacant lots. By cutting down on materials and processes as far as possible, the execution was based on using readily available and transportable generic elements, eschewing sophisticated techniques and processes and facilitating adaptability to d.

This project makes use of a plot which had been vacant for a long time, next to the ground floor of a typical London row house. This proximity, the limited contact between the plot and the street and the small size of the premises, made merging these two constraints, in order to build a more beneficial relationship, seemingly inevitable. The initial work involved putting up a new dwelling with a prefabricated timber frame within the perimeter brick walls of the vacant plot.

"The brief required flexible workspace for a creative agency, mutable into an events area, turning into a school of design for certain months in the year, or a place to have fun –with a very limited budget. We needed a simple and light way to transform spatial arrangements. We proposed a system by which a team could develop ideas on a mood-wall and then take the wall to the meeting room for presentations". Taken from the project report.

This is a house standing on a large plot in a small city in Flanders. The main volume of the existing building on the street front is the guest annex. The new weekend house is in the courtyard and is laid out according to a sequence of spaces in perspective. There are four square rooms, each with a different use: courtyard, pool, weekend house and garden. The roof is retractable and covers the first two rooms.

The repurposing of this industrial unit as a property development office was based on preserving the visibility of the existing building, the block walls and the metal roof and acting on the interior with free-standing elements. Sustainable criteria, which are clear from a minimized use of materials, also influenced the choice of the timber, from Araucaria cunninghamii trees native to the area, to clad the boxes and for other elements used to build the space. Furniture was salvaged from forme.
