The programme for the Wieden+Kennedy New York offices opts for shared space for 96% of the work stations, most of which have been allocated an average area of 5 m2. The architecture firm WORKac laid out the desks in islands close to the facade and the centre of the floor plan is set aside for the meeting and shared working areas, thereby creating an archipelago of work stations surrounded by circulations. The upper gallery of an abandoned 1960s grain silo is the space where this project was undertaken. A 40 m long x 6.5 m wide unit was converted to an architectural studio located 38 m above the ground. By creating openings on the facade and making the most of the original materials the outcome was a setting with the appearance of an industrial shell into which less imposing elements could be inserted, such as the wooden crates which support the mezzanine level with the library, the desks, and .

Drawings by a+t research group

Lods and Beaudouin aimed to revolutionize the building process using prefabrication and dry assembly and with this in mind they based their work on a complex system of pre-study phases which involved engineers and architects working alongside manufacturers and builders. On completion of the design process they had a wide range of compatible components available which they could interchange at will. This dwelling is a temporary shelter for the homeless. By clearing the corner area and installing an open staircase all the units were given direct street access. This way the four superimposed dwellings were given an increased feeling of individuality for the residents who do not enter a private closed space until they cross the threshold into their house. The open space for the staircase has an extended vertical sight-line from the public street space right up to the access points. Resident.
