When the architects undertook work on this dwelling from the post-war period, when it was a common practise in Japan to imitate Western architecture, they discovered that the original timber structure of the gable roof, typical in English houses, had been reinforced using braces and steel girders in order to avoid having to insert more columns into the floor plan. This discovery led them to partially remove the false ceilings so as to leave the original structure exposed, highlighting the metal reinforcements by painting them red.
