Collectif Etc. Détour de France, Place au Changement. France
May 25, 2012
Collectif Etc propose acting experimentally on public space in a creative way by involving the different actors on the urban stage: inhabitants, users, professionals... who can intervene on different scales: building structures and objects, organizing meetings and workshops or putting forward more artistic interventions on the city.
The twelve active members of Collectif Etc, eleven architects and a graphic designer, set off a cycle tour around the whole of France starting in October 2011. They called it Le Détour de France (06A) in a strange mix between the Tour de France and Situationist détournement. The trip was flexibly planned, was to last one year and served to document and analyze participative practices in creating urban projects.
La Place au changement (06B) was the result of a competition won by Collectif Etc organized by a public company in Saint Etienne, France. This is one of those hybrid situations where power takes advantage of the tactical proposals and integrates collective activism. Within the transformation process that this city district is undergoing, Collectif Etc collaborated with local residents to renovate a public space in a disused plot before the building works begin.
