Cascoland. Cascoland Mafikeng. Mafikeng. South Africa
May 25, 2012
Cascoland is an international network of artists, architects and designers based around cross-disciplinary projects intervening on public space. The projects are set up with the aim to reactivate voids or run-down neighbourhoods, to promote sustainable mobility or to give disused infrastructures back to citizens.
The project for the city Mafikeng kicked off in 2007 when Cascoland was approached by Vrije University, Amsterdam to carry out a series of activities parallel to the celebration of the football World Cup in 2010 together with the University of Mafikeng. The Mmabatho stadium was built for the city in 1981, during the Apartheid era, with 59,000 capacity. At present, its use is very limited, which makes it an excellent test bed for architects, artists and designers regarding how to revive underused spaces.
