Atelier Bow-Wow. Miyashita Park Renovation. Tokyo
May 17, 2012
Miyashita Park was built in 1964 on the roof of a public car park. Its interstitial location over the railway tracks along with its being above street level led to a long period of disuse and occupation by many homeless people. Recently the major commercial development of the Shibuya Ward has encouraged interest from a private sponsor to transform this space. The formula chosen to carry out the renovation work on this site has been for private investment in return for the installation of payfor- use sports facilities. The financial support included changing the name of the park, an idea which was eventually to be abandoned owing to citizen protest.
