Boven Bouw. Transit house I. Antwerp. Belgium

This dwelling is a temporary shelter for the homeless. By clearing the corner area and installing an open staircase all the units were given direct street access. This way the four superimposed dwellings were given an increased feeling of individuality for the residents who do not enter a private closed space until they cross the threshold into their house. The open space for the staircase has an extended vertical sight-line from the public street space right up to the access points. Resident interaction takes place in a semi-closed space which eases the strain of everyday friction between these homeless people.
