“The location occupied by this market house is firstly a fragment of the city and secondly a house, a space which has constantly shifted throughout the centuries and where each contour served to support the next, semi-concealed or re-used each time. The first action which took place involved this situation as a palimpsest. The architects themselves do the demolition and clearance work so as to get to know step by step what the house may be hiding. They tear down the false ceilings, partition walls and cladding over walls and structural framework from the eighties when an attempt was made to convert the dwelling into a kind of apartment, an impossible venture to try to tame the ambiguous nature of this centuries-old dwelling owned by former butchers which winds its way deep inside the block. The project is built and re-built at the same time more like a way of rescuing a lost opportunity than inventing the future.” The authors.
