Jean Nouvel. Dwellings in New York
April 18, 2011
The project was designed to create visual excitement for both residents inside the building and passers-by on the street. The 23-storey condominium tower features a curved mosaic of nearly 1,700 different-sized panes of tranparent glass, each set at a unique angle and torque. This curtain wall mosaic will frame splendid views from within the tower while producing an exterior texture that is a poetic analog for the vibrancy, density and changeability of New York.
At 100 11th Avenue’s base, a separate sevenstorey street wall of mullioned glass will stand 4.5 meters from the building’s facade, creating a semi-enclosed atrium. Within it, suspended gardens of ornamental vegetation and trees will appear to float in mid-air; private indoor and outdoor terraces will extend from residences; and an open-air dining patio for the lobby restaurant.
The homes will range in size from 82 m2 to 434 m2. All of them have super-customized interiors that are inspired by finishings of the West Chelsea district’s many art galleries.
