De Vylder Vinck Taillieu. House Alexis. Ghent. Belgium

This new roof is actually more than just a single roof. It echoes all the roofs in the street as an irregular reflection of the setting. One single material defines the interior and another the exterior. There are folds in the roofing which can be seen not only from the outside but also from the inside. Each beam is individually sized and the joints can be seen from the bed where one notices the inclined support. Three layers of covering: wood, insulation and a waterproof layer which has been traditionally used for flat roofs. Here it is visible and can be seen from the street as a seamless material, as an abstract element which helps reinforce the volumetric sense of the work.
