Author of the video: Bat Yam Biennale
The edges of Bat Yam, in south Tel Aviv, were programmed by Alexander Baerwald, in his 1926 plan, as an area for exclusive industrial use. Over time, residential areas have surrounded the area and the retail use which supports these is replacing the declining industry. This is an area undergoing change, where new uses are spontaneously appearing. There are a multitude of derelict buildings and residual spaces. Invasive plant species grow spontaneously in these spaces. In this context, the authorities have started to support specific initiatives which act upon this area, as part of a larger more ambitious plan to transform the area.
a+t magazine 39-40, Reclaim, collects some of the actions on the project, such as:
- Building a landscape from rubble
- Converting concrete walls into paving slabs
Two pages from the project published in a+t 39-40 Reclaim
