Froetscher Lichtenwagner, Idealice. O-Dorf Square. Innsbruck. Austria

Froetscher Lichtenwagner, Idealice. O-Dorf Square. Innsbruck. Austria

The Olympic Village in Innsbruck was built for the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Games and is a highrise housing complex with 8,000 inhabitants. It exhibits all the characteristics of an European peripheral housing estate and struggles with the same problems: lacking infrastructure, insuffcient cultural life,  monofunctionalism, as well as segregation of ethnic minorities. Through the Europan IV competition, the city of Innsbruck took the first step to the revaluation of the neighbourhood. The public square constitutes the new centre of the quarter. The intention was not so much to harken back to a notion of tradicional urban form, but rather to allow for an animated platform of everyday life, a well as for community activities.
