David Adjaye. Rivington Place. London
June 30, 2008
One approaches this new visual arts centre in the East End of London by going through a neighbourhood in the middle of transformation. The City pushes towards the west and old industrial warehouses are being renovated as offices, art galleries, bars and restaurants.
Rivington Place is one of the main works of this gentrification and it has the support of the public. The new neighbour doesn't want to go unnoticed in the neighbourhood and at first glance its categorical volume and massive grey façade seen to speak a gesture-based language that its neighbours can't understand.
However, seeing the inside, those gestures disappear and give way to warm and cosy spaces: the exhibition hall right off the street is almost an extension of the pavement, the café is inviting and calm, and the library is far from all solemnity on the way from the simplicity of the public service buildings of the neighbourhood.
