Before and After. Matadero unit 8b. Arturo Franco. Madrid. Spain
May 07, 2013
Unit 8b is a space allocated for administration work. It comprises a work area, a storage area and a multi-purpose space for talks and presentations. Originally they were additional halls to store the goods produced in the adjacent Unit 8 where the skins and the salted meat were dried. This is a smaller unit but in terms of space of great interest. The original layout has been preserved. The intervention prioritised reinstating a flat tiled roof on top of boards and bricks in bad condition, reinforcing the structure of the building and thermally and acoustically retrofitting the interior in preparation for the new uses.
Reclaim, the latest issue of a+t magazine, includes a chapter entitled Before & After. It presents the general background to each project and the graphic information of that existing before each intervention. It is a summary of the situations at the starting point and the results obtained at a given time.
