Boston Central Artery. United States
October 09, 2012
‘The Big Dig’, officially known as the Central Artery/Tunnel, consisted of the tunnelling of an urban motorway that had passed over the centre of Boston since 1959, separating the business district from the neighbourhoods near the port, hindering their participation in the economic development of the city.
The project entailed the construction of 6.5 km of tunnels and freed up 60,000 m2 of space, christened the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. This space has been used for the construction of new parks that seek to connect the more active and densely populated neighbourhoods of Boston. From north to south, the actions were as follows: North End Parks (by Crosby Schlessinger Smallridge, Gustafson Guthrie Nichol), Wharf District Parks (Edaw, Copley Wolff Design Group), Dewey Square (Machado and Silvetti Associates) and Chinatown Park (Carol R Johnson Associates).
