Zurich West was born in the first Industrial Revolution, strategically located between the train stations, the river Limmat and the Letten viaduct, which borders it to the south. Its industry was thriving until the 1970s and today, after a period of downturn, it is experiencing a strong revival. The Zurich-West plan is a result of City Council-led cooperation between all parties involved including public opinion for whom specific information channels were opened informing of the progress of the works. Zurich West incorporates a technology park and new public spaces and blends in business with housing and retail units in refurbished or new buildings (see a+t 26, Turbinenplatz; a+t 32, Toni Areal; a+t 33-34, the transformation of the Löwenbräu).
a+t magazine 39-40, Reclaim, collects some of the actions in the refurbishment of Letten viaduct, such as:
- Converting a railway track into a pedestrian path
- Converting a residual space into an active front
