Reworking the two units of the former Madrid Matadero (Abbatoir) as the Casa del Lector (House for the Reader) meant a second storey needed to be built. The top floor, built using 52 tonne pre-fabricated pre-stressed concrete U beams, is a space for both research and work. Unlike the light metal-framed basilica-like structure of industrial units, the concrete beams are inserted by crossing the existing voids and criss-crossing over the space. The lower storey, on the other hand, will be for training and culture-based activities.
a+t magazine 39-40, Reclaim, collects some of the actions in the Reader's House, such as incorporating a top floor using prefab beams.
