OMA. Metacity Rotterdam. Rotterdam. The Netherlands
June 27, 2010
The proposed modular system offers high efficiency and versatility in both construction and programme. The equally-sized cells can be added or taken out of the structure according to the changing needs of the building, for residential or office use. This model again takes the route created by previous experience, such as the Metastadt project by Richard J. Dietrich and Bernd Stiegerwald (1974), or the Square LType system by Van den Broek & Bakema (1967). With these prototypes, the idea was to acheive a sort of flexible urban planning that would be capable of growing limitlessly both vertically and horizontally. Now the model is applied in the centre of Rotterdam as a ‘shapeless’ reaction to the abrupt sequence of architectural styles that have filled the city, reconstructed after World War II.
