Rotterdam holds its open air market twice a week in Binnenrotte, the inhospitable surface which came about in 1993 after the tunnelling of the railroad tracks through the centre. Recently, a new law forbids the sale of food in uncovered spaces and thus the opportunity to build a market covered by a large vault of flats and two large glass coverings. The new building, with its public car park, will allow for commercial use all week long, attracting activity to this generally lifeless sector of the city. Over the market, different types of housing must adapt, not without difficulties, to the shape of the vaulted covering.
