El Campo de Cebada is an action by Zuloark which is a model for participative urbanism and is an unstable structure which proactively encourages collaboration between citizens and administration in order to intervene temporarily on disused public space. The aim is to take back the space for citizen enjoyment. The physical space has become a victim of those down times which occur in city planning. It is a square in a highly dense setting of great commercial value in the very centre of Madrid, located within the inner road belt. The location had traditionally been a space for socializing. At present it is occupied by a street market which replaced the previous steel framed market which was knocked down in 1965. In 1968 the only sports facility in the Central District containing a swimming pool was erected on the site but this was also to be demolished later on.
