Double House. Design techniques by Langarita Navarro

"...‘Bust and Pelt’ is a way of categorizing the content of this physical part of the world. We have translated these two terms into Bust and Pelt, the pelt being the skin seeking for independence. The Bust is architecture’s hard part: inorganic and inert, it erodes slowly and its transformation implies expensive means.  Architectural archives have learned how to look, talk and write about the Bust.
The Bust does not need living people; it can be preserved without them.

The Pelt, on the other hand, is organic and soft; it turns rotten and decomposes easily. It doesn´t need special training to intervene in it, just bricoleur tools. The pelt is difficult to read; it does not stand by itself. It doesn´t leave a trace when it disappears. It needs the actions and affections of the living to become visible. Generally, it does not resist the passage of time..."

Text extracted from the article "Bust and Pelt" (a+t 45 Design Techniques), where María Langarita and Víctor Navarro explain the Langarita Navarro design techniques. Specifically, those applied in the Cerro Juli Auditorium, Archivo de arquitectura y diseño, Casa Doble, Medialab-Prado, Depósito de especies and Red Bull Music Academy projects.

a+t 45 Design Techniques looks at different approaches to the creative moment. Authors such as Lacaton & Vassal, Langarita-Navarro, Momoyo Kaiyima and SO-IL reveal their modus operandi, explain how they tackle the project and discuss motivation, devices, influences, justifications, effects and the origins of their design techniques.
