Stan Allen Architects received the mandate to transform Taichung's decommissioned Municipal Airport into the city's new cultural district. The current site is a virtual Tabula Rasa measuring 250 hectares and located at one of the city's main growth corridors. What to do with such an immense opportunity for urbanism? Stan Allen Architects proposed to create a single unifying element that incorporates as many program elements as possible: circulation, green space and natural ecologies, new cultural institutions and research facilities, as well as major public attractors such as the convention hall and the new dome.
