Jordi Garcés. Refurbishment of a sugar refinery. Barcelona. Spain
September 04, 2012
After the demise of the paradigm of unlimited city growth as a motor for generating wealth and high returns, renovation, refurbishment and implementation of new uses on the existing urban fabric have taken its place. The building adds to the many operations which have taken place in recent years aimed at rethinking, re-using and renovating the constructed urban fabric, both in Poblenou and other areas.
The project occupies the facilities of a former sugar refinery located in a block in the Cerdà plan. The block is divided into two parts by a passageway: a situation which is typical in the grid of the Barcelona urban extension. This passageway is used to concentrate the access areas and the free spaces which define the layout of the intervention and which connect to the immediate settings of the neighbourhood open onto this.
