James Corner Field Operations. Race Street Pier. Philadelphia. United States

James Corner Field Operations. Race Street Pier. Philadelphia. United States

This is one of the first interventions to give Philadelphia back its river. The run-down waterfront has freed up large areas of public spaces which the authorities want to link up to the business district. This operation is similar to the recovery of the Brooklyn waterfront, where the pier structures were also put to use. A ramp allows the space to be divided into two levels, connected by stands. On the lower platform, a multi-purpose field occupies most of the space and two perforations in the structure allow the changing tides to be experienced close-up.
