Goldfinger. Trellick Tower: Hybrid or Social Condenser?
September 12, 2014
One of the first people to propose high-rise social housing was Ernö Goldfinger, with a scheme for housing and circulation similar to that of L’Unité applied to a 31-storey tower block, which had a lower section with common services added on. Integrated living, as the author named the programme of flats and services, did not guarantee living as a community and the building became hell on earth for the tenants, who started leaving due to the lack of safety in the common spaces. However, the privatization of the housing in an area as appealing as Notting Hill and the new complex management system, incorporating surveillance systems, has managed to regenerate the building.
