Chamberlin, Powell & Bon, Arup. Barbican: Hybrid or Social Condenser?
May 05, 2014
This was the result of an initiative by the City of London to rebuild the area which
had been devastated in the Second World War.
The housing shortage and the lack of space led to the design for a large residential
complex incorporating shops, a youth hostel and educational, sports, cultural and
leisure programmes. Three 43- and 44-storey towers house the bulk of the dwellings,
leaving space for large public-use garden areas.
Project published in the article Hybrid versus Social Condenser by Aurora Fernández Per included in This is Hybrid.
