According to Rem Koolhaas, the operation to cantilever the podium 36 metres above ground-level contains multiple meanings, –the subversion of Modernism, the representation of volatility, the financial euphoria of the city of Shenzen...– yet the most evident aspect of this strategic operation if to have three 15,000 m2 storeys floating above the treetops instead of standing at ground level. In this case it was not sufficient to design a speculative building with office space for rent, to make the building commercially viable. It was also necessary to make the power of the Shenzen Stock Exchange rise above its rivals Hong Kong and Shanghai both in virtual and physical terms.
