Diederendirrix. Anton building. Eindhoven. The Netherlands

The Anton Building is a listed industrial building constructed in 1928 by the company Philips. Along with another twin building, Gerard –in memory of the two brothers Anton and Gerard Philips– it forms a strip close to downtown Eindhoven which is undergoing radical transformation. The interior of the Building Anton has been perforated by five cylindrical cores which visually connect the communal spaces on different levels. There are shared spaces in the building such as storerooms and laundry rooms. Initially the programme envisaged live/work units but the authorities prohibited all other uses except social housing. The apartments have four-metre-high ceilings enabling a mezzanine level to be incorporated. Residents were selected by the semi-public housing association based on their lifestyles. This led to a pro-creative class selection process from the ideas developed by Richard Florida in his book Cities and the Creative Class.
