Personal Architecture, Maarten Polkamp, Sander van Schaik. Supercube. Rotterdam. The Netherlands

The Supercube, which is part of the well-known residential complex of 38 dwellings built by Piet Blom in 1982, had been vacant for thirty years. The Exodus Foundation, a private not-for-profit body which helps to provide accommodation and support to ex-convicts was given the task of supervising the conversion of this volume into a shared residence for 21 people in the final phase of their prison term. Inserting a new central multi-functional element meant the interior could be given a new layout with no apparent change on the exterior. The design succeeded in solving the initial discontinuity, communication and lighting issues by creating a 3 by 3 metre vertical void. The aim is for this dense brave residential use to integrate well with the residents of the other cubes, with the volunteers taking part in the support programme and with companies based in the area.
