Incorporating the architects’ own office into this 14th Century building was part of an integrated refurbishment plan for the whole complex, a former convent which had lain derelict for over 20 years. Work undertaken on the building over the years had included adding a 19th Century staircase and servant bedrooms. In order to return the building to the perception of the original space, the architects removed the partition walls and the false ceilings, leaving the timber frame exposed, and installed insulation on the exterior. Given the difficulty of removing the access stairs, they chose to conceal them with floor-to-ceiling ‘cupboards’ covered with mirrors.
