Project published in a+t 33-34. HYBRIDS III. Residential Mixed-Use Buildings.

In 2001, the city of Basel implemented a plan to avoid population dispersion in rural areas. The plan includes the construction of 5,000 new housing units before 2010 and in doing so, it has managed to stop the population loss that the city has suffered since the 1970s as people moved to the suburbs.

The renovation of this block, in the heart of Munich, is a work of composing in-fills and voids in which that already existing is submitted to the new order, based on the use of the entire ground floor as retail space.

A series of passageways links up with the surrounding streets, each one having a distinct character. In the project several studios took part, within the general urban concept designed by H&dM.

The headquarters of the collection is a small building in the garden of the private house of the owner, Ingvild Goetz, who wanted a space where she could temporarily exhibit some works.

The planning regulations of the residential area where it is located restricted the footprint and the height, such that it is made up of one excavated floor and one upper floor as exhibition space. The floor between, on ground level, houses a library and an office. Initially conceived for private use, .

Herzog & de Meuron. de Young Museum. San Francisco

The de Young Museum was founded in 1895 and its headquarters in Central Park, San Francisco was kept open until 1989 when it was severely damaged by an earthquake. The new headquarters is a far more compact building than its predecessor: its footprint is 37% smaller, which has allowed part of the space occupied by the former building to be returned to the park.

The main pedestrianised street in Miami Beach awaits the arrival of this multi-purpose complex. Surrounded by the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world, a series of overlapping trays are connected by a circuit of ramps for cars. This car access will allow the building to be toured and to access homes and businesses that are in its path.

The Paseo del Prado in Madrid is in luck on two parts: to the trio of recently enlarged existing museums (Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofía), the Caixaforum centre can be added after the renovation of the former power station Central Eléctrica del Mediodía.

In Central Europe, the term neue Einfachheit seems to be coming into its own in order to group current architectures that point towards a new simplicity.1 New reviews of rationalism have appeared in countries with a deep-rooted gothic tradition, such as Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and even Great Britain.
