Complex systems, on the other hand, are known for being uncertain, diverse, non-linear, holistic and for garnering order from their inherent chaos. In 19301, when Ludwig Hilberseimer developed the model for urban composition, which he called Mischbebauung (mixed development), consistent in an approach involving mixed-height housing development, Modernism stood at a critical moment. Unidirectional regulation was being applied not only to nine-storey north- south facing blocks but also to one of the axes of the L-shaped grid of detached houses and this was mostly a result of exposure to sunlight being the main regulatory criterion. In Lafayette Park, Detroit, 1955-1960, (see p. 85) and as a result of the previous theoretical model, Hilberseimer, in partnership with Caldwell and Mies van der Rohe, brought together house- building and landscape, urban and suburban character, pedestrian paths and car parks... opposing dualisms later replicated by all as a modern paradigm for urban planning. Europapark, on the left bank of the river Scheldt in Antwerp, (see p. 87) was not to be spared from this mindset and when it was completed in 1973, it had strayed from the mix of residential fabric with facilities espoused within the doctrine of The Complexity of Everyday Life JAvIER MozAS 1. That very year, Le Corbusier was developing the plan for the ville Radieuse. Ese mismo año, Le Corbusier estaba desarrollando el plan para la Ville Radieuse. mixers Mixers are complex buildings loaded with stimulating uses which, when inserted into a run- down urban fabric, mix up the entire organism and exert an influence which goes far beyond their physical scope and which manages to exponentially revitalize the whole built environment. In the 1970s Aldo Rossi believed in an approach to architecture with a historic sensibility, with a view towards tradition, towards the setting. He was involved with a group of friends, including Giorgio Grassi and Carlo Aymonino, which advocated reinstating the simple forms of architecture as the rational and archetypal forms, albeit in combination with each other in a subjective and complex manner. This approach enabled the construction of analogous cities with, be they real or imaginary, recognizable elements and architectures which would more effectively transmit the desires and memory of a collective. How is it possible to retain an atmosphere, in this case that of St. Pauli, one of the most indomitable areas on Europe? If we bear in mind that at the turn of the last century any urban intervention on a site such as east Hamburg would have involved relentless demolition works, at the present moment in time more imaginative more complex solutions are required as an alternative to the former market-driven methods. The NL and BeL plan for Spielbudenplatz first collects and distils these concerns, then factors in the essential architectural elements before finally transforming them into spaces and forms built with inherent identity and meaning, incorporating memory and context as project materials. For this to succeed it is necessary to create a harmonious concordance between all the actors involved and here this has been the case. The Complexity of Context JAvIER mozAS storytellers Storytellers are those buildings which speak from the eye and the mind of the architect. The richer, the more settled their references, the more playful and imaginative their connections with reality, culture or history, and the more unexpected facets to be discovered by spectators as they try to decipher the buildings’ codes.
