< Previous42 Re RETRIEVE - Chapter 02 - The verb to retrieve originates from the French term retrouver, meaning to find again. Oftentimes it is used as a synonym for to recover, but the act of finding again points towards elements or qualities whose existence was already known. In this respect, memory plays an integral role in the rediscovery process. It is recovering what was buried or abandoned with the same characteristics: the traces of a historical centre; the beams concealed by a false ceiling; the hand cutting of wood. It is neither about re-creating nor adding nostalgia to the present; rather, it is about making once again what was, during some time, overlooked. Barcelona (Spain) 2011122 Re SIMULATE - Chapter 04 - The actions of simulation are not part of the processes considered Re-, in that they do not imply an act being performed on what was previously there. They are included in this set because they appear frequently in the selected projects. They are actions that compose the design process, like tools to represent reality —design sketches, interior bas- reliefs— or also the execution process —camouflaged doors, mansard mirrors, printed slates with brick bonding. What they bring forth is an added value, given that they always work in favor of reducing elements and understanding the project. This involves a pivoting door with a vertical axis which on the one hand functions as a bookshelf and on the other hand has smooth timber panelling which blends in with the partition wall. This interior timber wall is exactly the same thickness as the exterior wall. A window with two moving sashes which echoes the facade has also been built into this element, and serves to bring light, through the living area, into this corner of the kitchen which was cut off from the exterior when the respective opening was filled in.
