Bruit du Frigo. Quai de Queyries, Temporary Beach, Garden at the Wall, Le Brasero. Bordeaux. France

Bruit du Frigo is an entity formed by professionals from several different disciplines (architecture, urbanism, media, landscape architecture, sociology...) whose teams are organized according to the requirements of each project.

Quai de Queyries
For four days, Bruit du Frigo occupied a small area of the park, intensifying the activity by introducing unusual uses. The action was a success and there was mass citizen participation in the programme. The short intervention served, however, as a seed for the actions which have taken place in the city on a longer time frame.

Temporary Beach
The void was awaiting the forthcoming construction of permanent facilities. Financing came from a partnership between different local and regional administrations. This was to be another of the interventions taking place in Les lieux possibles programme and triggered a one year long participation programme which involved local residents, authorities and designers. Together they made an input to the programme of requirements not only regarding the temporary action but also the future facilities.

Garden at the wall
The site, owned by the French Ministry of Defence, is a very well preserved space containing large trees and welcoming lawns. It had been closed off to the public by a wall but the authors obtained the required permits to partially demolish this wall. For safety reasons, only forty users were allowed to occupy it at one time and for the first three weeks the garden took on shared uses, set out in an ambitious detailed schedule of activities.

Le Brasero
The area is now object of a municipal renovation plan aiming to diversify uses and improve the constructed heritage. The Bruit du Frigo collective preferred to install an outdoor classroom in the heart of the district so as to be able to sit down with the local residents, sound out their real desires and to let them put forward ideas, be they realistic or completely utopian, concerning the city they want to live in.
