Man-made mountains
On Robin Hood Gardens and 8 House
March 24, 2014

The creation of an artificial mountain landscape amidst the Robin Hood Gardens (London 1966-1972) blocks was a strategy designed by Alison and Peter Smithson with three aims in mind: to create privacy for residents, to recreate on-site a country setting rather than a playground, and to avoid transporting off-site the material from the earthworks, which was used to build the mounds. Years later, Big were to re-use the same strategy in their project for 8 House, (Copenhagen 2008-2010).
