Turning the past into design generator. The street layout
Station C23. Dessau Landscape Corridor. Germany
April 30, 2014

The traces of the past justify many of the programme, composition or material decisions shaping this public space. These arguments are easily understood both by the political authorities who commission the spaces and by the public who are the end users. It is up to the designer to search for a middle ground between solid memory and hollow nostalgia.
Garten Street and its buildings have disappeared. The old road has been carefully taken up respecting the original construction which used large square slabs, whose disappearance, fragmentation or maintenance determine the grass areas, the planting of bushes and the lavender beds which grow on the demolished fragments.
