It involves a multipurpose complex located on the wharf which aims to act as a counterpart to downtown Rotterdam. The project maintains the bulk of the functions originally foreseen, even though public initiative has with- drawn from the project, and as a result, the cultural uses have disappeared from the programme. The groundbreaking in late 2009 offers an optimistic vision of how to make the most of the downturn. Three multifunctional towers will feature space for corporate offi ces, residential apartments, a hotel, congress, restaurants, retail, public program and car park -creating a bustling vertical city that is active 24 hours a day. OMA has further developed the essential concept of the hybrid model: the vertical city, in a dense diverse building-city, based on mixed use. 1:5,000 DE ROTTERDAM by OMA Wilhelminapier Rotterdam. The hybrid is the consequence of a rant against tradition, it sticks two fingers up at typology. It is an opportunist building which makes the most out of its multiple skills, a key player which revitalizes the urban scene and saves space. The hybrid scheme proposes cross-fertilization environ- ments, where known genotypes are mixed and new ge- netic alliances are created. This way the personality of the hybrid emerges, as a celebration of complexity. Hybridization is associated with a certain form of gran- deur, of gigantism, as mixing imposes grandeur. The hy- brid surpasses the domains of architecture and settles into the urban scale. It is an artefact able to exercise cen- tripetal force, a colossus counteracting the evil forces of dispersion. The intimacy of private life and the sociability of public life dwell within the hybrid and produce constant activity, mak- ing it a building working full-time. It is not a disciplinary prototype but a concentration of interests, based not on tradition but rather on the future and the survival of which hinges on consensus. THIS IS HYBRID is an updated and enlarged selection of the articles and projects published initially in the Hybrids se- ries of the a+t magazine. The prologue, written by Steven Holl specially for this compilation, puts forward the potential of hybrid buildings in the 21st Century. Research on new prototypes, conducted by Iñaki Ábalos at AAP-Cornell GSD-Harvard and BIArch-Barcelona com- pletes this volume in which reality is closer to utopia.
