Some strategies are focused on surviving anti-social behaviour while others are designed to withstand the elements or constant use. ENDURING RESISTIR STRUCTURES/FURNITURE It is not necessary for the rest area in a public space to be a leisure area for it to become an experience. It is enough to deliver the opportunity to go up to a higher level and observe the setting, to transfer an unexpected piece of landscape, to produce the effect of a microclimate or to propose activities. Consuming experiences is on our list of requirements and public space will be appealing insofar as it is able to induce these experiences. INDUCING EXPERIENCES PROVOCAR EXPERIENCIAS Designing specific elements for public spaces is the moment of greatest craftsmanship in a construction project. The trial and error tests in the workshop do not always coincide with what happens on-site. In any case systematizing the elements and standardizing solutions allows greater control over the outcome. Transforming mass-produced elements into unique elements, through manipulating them or adding elements, is the most cost-effective way to achieve customization, even though very often designers tend towards singularity through elements designed to that effect. Its interstitial location over the railway tracks along with its being above street level led to a long period of disuse and occupation by many homeless people. Recently the major commercial development of the Shibuya Ward has encouraged interest from a private sponsor to transform this space. The formula chosen to carry out the renovation work on this site has been for private investment in return for the installation of pay- for-use sports facilities. The financial support included changing the name of the park, an idea which was eventually to be abandoned owing to citizen protest. 1:10.000 PROJECT COST COSTE DEL PROYECTO (euros/m2) SITE AREA SUPERFICIE DE LA INTERVENCIÓN (m2) 308,33 14.00047 SOCIAL FORMAL ENVIRONMENT AL OBJECTSSITETERRITORY 36STRATEGY HABITAT MANAGING RAINWATER GESTIONAR PLUVIALES Perforated treewell Alcorque perforado 50STRATEGY FLUXES CONNECTING CONECTAR Walkways and stairs Pasarelas y escaleras 44STRATEGY HABITAT MANAGING MAINTENANCE GESTIONAR MANTENIMIENTO Limiting flower beds and bushes Limitación de parterres y arbustos 54STRATEGY USERS PARTICIPATING PARTICIPAR Design of the climbing wall Diseño de la pared de escalada 65STRATEGY USERS ENSURING ACCESIBILITY ASEGURAR LA ACCESIBILIDAD UNIVERSAL Elevators Ascensores 11STRATEGY PROGRAMME ACTIVATING INTERSTITIAL SPACES ACTIVAR ESPACIOS INTERSTICIALES Pay-for-use sports areas and events square Áreas deportivas de pago y plaza de eventos 94STRATEGY STRUCTURES/FURNITURE REUSING REUTILIZAR Club-House Casa-club 24STRATEGY BACKGROUND INTEGRATING THE EXISTING INTEGRAR LO EXISTENTE Futsal courts Pistas de fútbol-sala 62STRATEGY USERS DISSUADING DISUADIR Controlling accesses Control de accesos 59 STRATEGY USERS PREVENTING AND REASSURING PREVENIR Y ASEGURAR Chain link fence Valla de simple torsión 87STRATEGY STRUCTURES/FURNITURE SYSTEMATIZING SISTEMATIZAR Multi-purpose posts Poste multiusos 82STRATEGY STRUCTURES/FURNITURE ENDURING RESISTIR Bench-Concrete ledge Banco-antepecho de hormigón 17STRATEGY CONCEPT TURNING THE PAST INTO DESIGN GENERATOR CONVERTIR EL PASADO EN GENERADOR The existing trees Los árboles existentes 79STRATEGY SURFACES CREATING A COMPOSITION CREAR COMPOSICIONES Recycled rubber figures Figuras de caucho reciclado 13STRATEGY PROGRAMME OPTIMIZING SPACE OPTIMIZAR EL ESPACIO Removing perimeter slopes Eliminación de taludes perimetrales 88STRATEGY STRUCTURES/FURNITURE SYSTEMATIZING SISTEMATIZAR Galvanized steel pergola Pérgola de acero galvanizado64 74STRATEGY SURFACES OPTIMIZING MATERIALS OPTIMIZAR EL MATERIAL LAYER OF PAINT OVER EPOXY RESIN The coloured polyurethane finish has been applied both to the base layer of asphalt of the red square and to the dividing wall of a nearby building, to the walls enclosing the grounds and most of the furniture. Instead of imposing a purely Danish design they become a showcase for other cultures in a neighbourhood where some 60 nationalities co-exist. This helps to create a feeling of belonging among a highly diverse population. 98STRATEGY LIGHT POSTS Four posts mark out the access to Superkilen from Norrebro high street.
