Ruisanzchez arquitectos. Library and Cultural Centre . Barcelona

Like the Library and Day Center by RCR Arquitectes, the project forms part of the ProEixample programme for the revitalisation of the district. The new library is part of the programme of existing public buildings (a civic centre and a market), impelling a new nucleus of nearby public services.

The project is based on the recycling of an existing building, most of whose structure is used, removing its central bay and modifying the old coverings of glass and aluminium.

The recycling of buildings fits into several sustainability criteria, as it implies savings in construction materials and does not generate debris. We decided in Civilities II to promote this trend and in this issue we include several projects of obsolete buildings in consolidated urban fabric that have been turned into new public service buildings (Young Vic Theatre, Central térmica de Alcudia, Intermediae_Prado and FRAC Centre).
