La Dallman. Marsupial Bridge. Milwaukee. USA
Patricia García - August 14, 2012. 09:30

In the heart of the densest neighborhood in southeastern Wisconsin, vast areas of downtown Milwaukee were disconnected by urban infrastructure and former manufacturing zones. The surroundings of the historic Holton Street viaduct, that crosses the Milwaukee River valley, are now regenerated by introducing three interwoven components: the Marsupial bridge, a new urban plaza and a bus shelter. Acting as a gateway toward the new public amenities, the bus shelter is the connecting link between the city and the infrastructure.

The Marsupial Bridge is a pedestrian and bicycle ‘highway’ that links downtown with residential neighborhoods and natural amenities. It is hung from the over-structured viaduct that crosses the river. Its undulating deck offers a counterpoint to the existing steel members, and was inspired by the notion of weaving a spine through a structure.
